Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam: The Missile Man Who Rose From a Small Town to Inspire an Entire Nation

Born in a simple coastal town and raised in a poor family, he grew into one of the world’s most respected scientists, thinkers, and Presidents. His journey proves that a powerful dream can rise above every hardship.
The Humble Beginnings
Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, in a simple Muslim family. His father was a boat owner, and his mother cooked and served food to local pilgrims.
Life was not easy.
Money was limited.
Opportunities were rare.
Young Kalam sold newspapers after school to support his family. But even during difficulties, he carried one treasure inside him:
Curiosity
He loved science, airplanes, birds, and the idea of flying. This curiosity became the foundation of his future achievements.
A Student With Big Dreams
Kalam was not a topper in school, but he was hardworking, sincere, and deeply committed to learning. His teachers noticed something different about him — a spark that could not be ignored.
One of his teachers, Sivasubramania Iyer, taught him the principles of flight by taking him near the sea and explaining how birds soar. That moment planted a seed:
“One day, I will fly.”
This dream pushed him towards science and engineering.
He pursued aeronautical engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT), where he spent hours refining his skills and pushing his limits.
Turning Struggles Into Success
After college, Kalam wanted to become a fighter pilot.
He reached the final interview…
But he ranked 9th, and only 8 candidates were selected.
It was heartbreaking.
But Kalam did not allow failure to define him. He believed:
“When you fail, it means the universe is redirecting you to something greater.”
He then joined DRDO, and later ISRO, where his true journey began.
The Rocket Man of India
India was still building its identity in science when Kalam joined ISRO. With limited resources, the team had to transport rocket parts:
- On bicycles
- On bullock carts
- By hand
Kalam never complained. Instead, he saw every challenge as an opportunity to innovate.
In 1980, Kalam led the team that successfully launched India’s first satellite, Rohini, into space through the SLV-3 rocket. This achievement marked India’s entry into the global space era.
Becoming the Missile Man
When Kalam moved to DRDO, he headed the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP). Under his leadership, India created powerful missiles like:
- Agni
- Prithvi
- Akash
- Trishul
This brilliant work earned him the title “Missile Man of India.”
His vision was clear: “A strong India needs strong science, technology, and youth.”
Pokhran: The Day India Roared
In 1998, Dr. Kalam played a key role in India’s nuclear tests at Pokhran, which established the country as a global nuclear power.
For the world, it was a shock.
For India, it was a moment of pride.
For Kalam, it was a dream fulfilled.
His calm leadership and scientific excellence made him a national hero.
The People’s President
In 2002, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam became the 11th President of India.
People loved him because:

- He encouraged youth
- He talked about dreams, not politics
- He lived a simple life despite great power
He was called “The People’s President” because he connected with the common man, especially students.
An Inspiration Till His Last Breath
Even after leaving the presidency, Kalam continued teaching, writing, and meeting students. He always believed:
“Youth are the real strength of the nation.”
On 27 July 2015, while giving a lecture at IIM Shillong, he collapsed on stage… doing exactly what he loved — teaching.
The world lost a legend, but his legacy continues through millions of dreamers.
