Batata Poha – The Light and Fluffy Gujarati Breakfast

Batata Poha is a simple yet flavorful breakfast dish loved across Gujarat. Made with flattened rice, potatoes, and mild spices, it’s quick to prepare and perfect for a healthy, filling start to the day. Whether it’s for guests or your daily breakfast, poha never fails!

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 cups poha (flattened rice)
  • 1 medium potato, peeled and diced
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 2 green chilies (slit or chopped)
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 8–10 curry leaves
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp sugar (optional)
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Chopped coriander for garnish
  • Lemon wedges

‍ Method:

  1. Rinse poha under water in a colander. Let it rest to drain fully and soften.
  2. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, curry leaves, and green chilies.
  3. Add diced potatoes and cook until soft.
  4. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent.
  5. Sprinkle turmeric and salt. Mix well.
  6. Add soaked poha and gently mix to combine everything.
  7. Add sugar if desired and cook for 2–3 minutes on low flame.
  8. Turn off heat. Garnish with fresh coriander and squeeze lemon before serving.

Tips:

  • Use thick poha for better texture; thin poha can turn mushy.
  • Add roasted peanuts for crunch and protein.
  • Adjust sugar and lemon based on your taste preference.
